There was never any question about whether Kawasaki could try to knock Honda off the number one spot. Nobody doubted Kawasaki’s ability to build and produce big, strong performance bikes, but could they really succeed in the tough mass market for “small sports bikes” with the looks and performance of the Honda’s

So began the review of the 'new' Kawasaki models AR and AE in 1981. They did succeed in building a motorcycle that lasts for years and years.

Kawasaki wanted motorcycle novices between 16 - 18 years old, who would buy for technical innovation, big bike styling as well as performance. The engine was a 50cc; these were restricted to 30mph in UK. These were available in the AR 'sport bike' model as well as an AE 'trail' version.
